Bank Jakarta is set to build communal organic waste biodigesters at the Rorotan and Rawa Badak low-cost rental apartments (Rusunawa) in North Jakarta.
Jakarta, August 19 2026Jakarta – As part of its contribution to addressing environmental issues in Jakarta, Bank Jakarta plans to construct communal biodigesters utilizing organic waste through its Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) program. The project is set to be implemented at two locations in North Jakarta: the Rorotan Public Rental Housing (Rusunawa) in Cilincing and the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) Waste Processing Site in North Rawa Badak Urban Village. The initiative was marked by a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday (August 10) at the Rorotan Rusunawa, attended by Bank Jakarta Corporate Secretary Arie Rinaldi; the North Jakarta Mayor’s Assistant for Economy and Development, Wawan Budi Rohman; North Jakarta City Secretary, Iyan Sopian Hadi; Head of the North Jakarta Environmental Agency, Edy Mulyanto; and Cilincing District Head, Daniel Azka Alfarobi.
Bank Jakarta President Director Agus H. Widodo stated in an official release that the plan to build these communal biodigesters represents a tangible contribution by the bank toward addressing waste management issues in Jakarta, particularly regarding organic waste. Through biodigester technology, organic waste can be processed into biogas—a renewable energy source—and residue that can be utilized as organic fertilizer.
Agus further noted that waste management is a shared challenge requiring collaboration and consistency among various stakeholders. "The construction of the biodigester in Rorotan is a concrete contribution by Bank Jakarta to help address waste management challenges in the city. We want our TJSL program to deliver tangible benefits to the community while supporting efforts to preserve Jakarta's environment," Agus said.
This program is also part of the implementation of Bank Jakarta’s 2026 Sustainable Finance Action Plan (RAKB), specifically supporting organic waste management, greenhouse gas emission reduction, and the utilization of renewable energy. Technically, each biodigester is designed to process up to 250 kilograms of organic waste daily. With two biodigester units, the total processing capacity reaches 500 kilograms per day, yielding biogas and organic fertilizer residue. Based on technical assessments, the two biodigester units are projected to generate approximately 37.5 cubic meters of biogas daily and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 423 kilograms of CO2e per day, or 154.4 tons of CO2e annually.
Bank Jakarta Corporate Secretary Arie Rinaldi stated that waste management requires collaboration and program continuity. "Through the construction of these biodigesters, Bank Jakarta is participating in efforts to manage organic waste at the source while encouraging the creation of added value for the community from that waste. Collaboration with the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is crucial for ensuring that waste management efforts are carried out in a more integrated manner," said Arie.
The construction of the biodigester in Rorotan is part of Bank Jakarta's ongoing commitment to utilizing eco-friendly waste processing technology. Previously, Bank Jakarta supported the construction of a communal biodigester facility in Pekayon Urban Village, Pasar Rebo, East Jakarta, which was inaugurated in November 2025. "The experience gained from the Pekayon biodigester program informs our efforts to further expand our environmental contributions. We are now broadening the use of biodigester technology—processing organic waste at the source—through this collaborative program with the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government."
Through this program, Bank Jakarta and the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government hope to strengthen community-based organic waste management while fostering a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment for Jakarta.
This commitment also supports Bank Jakarta's contribution to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
