As a form of commitment to improving the quality of life of the community and the environment in a sustainable manner, Bank Jakarta collaborated with the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) DKI Jakarta and the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government to implement a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program in the form of building a Communal Septic Tank Installation with Biogas Utilization (Biodigester) in the Pekayon area, Pasar Rebo, East Jakarta. A communal septic tank using biogas is a centralized waste water treatment system (Waste Water Treatment Installation/Communal IPAL) which is specifically designed to process human waste (feces and household waste water) from a number of households, as well as capturing methane gas produced from the decomposition process to be converted into an energy source. This program is part of Bank Jakarta's real support for accelerating the achievement of the Stop Open Defecation (SBS)/Open Defecation Free (ODF) program, which is the first pillar of Community-Based Total Sanitation (STBM). Indirectly, the Biogas Digester Program can support improving public health, preventing environmental pollution (water and soil) and improving the quality of life of the community.
Utilization of Biogas Digester as an appropriate technology to reduce the number of open defecation in DKI Jakarta. Communal Biodigester is an integrated solution for managing organic waste and utilizing renewable energy at the community or community group level. The main role of the Communal Biodigester is
- Organic Waste Management (Sanitation and Environment)
- Renewable Energy Producer (Biogas), Biodigester converts organic waste through an anaerobic decomposition process (without oxygen) into energy substitutes as fuel for cooking and small-scale electricity generators.
- Producing Organic Fertilizer, Sludge (slurry) left over from the anaerobic digestion process in the digester still has high benefits.
Biogas digesters are used to accommodate feces and urine waste which will be fermented anaerobically with methanogenic bacterial rocks to produce biogas. Biogas is a gas containing methane (CH4) which can be used as an alternative energy source for cooking, lighting and to drive electric generators. The construction of a Communal Septic Tank Based on Appropriate Biogas Digester Technology in DKI Jakarta is also Bank Jakarta's effort to provide clean and affordable energy in line with Sustainable Development Goals Number 7, Clean and Affordable Energy where energy is a basic need that has an impact on economic growth and community welfare. These sustainable development goals underlie the goal of ensuring universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy with clean and affordable energy solutions.
